This year I want to write more about thrifty decor: inexpensive home decor ideas and how real people utilize vintage in their homes. This time we're taking a look at the art studio of the amazingly talented Old Skool Junk team.
If you're anything like me, in the midst of organizing tons of arts and craft supplies, you'll definitely take tons of ideas away from the crazy organized Old Skool Junk (first interview: here) duo.
1. Display Your Collections for Inspiration
Your workspace or art studio is the best place to display your quirky collections. (Especially if your housemate doesn't happen to appreciate your toys!)
2. Use Open Storage Solutions
Keep your supplies out in the open and you'll spend more time working and less time searching.
3. Invest in Storage Bins Aplenty
I noticed the Old Skool Junk team had tons of storage bins of various sizes that kept all their merchandise and supplies neatly organized. Must...emulate...
4. Have a Place for Everything
This duo has a place for everything, it's obvious when you look at the space and watch them work. They don't waste countless
5. Find a Space to Carve Out Your Own Studio
The Old Skool Junk studio is carved out of their home's large entryway, and each inch is used extremely efficiently. Find spare space in your home to carve out a creative nook of your own.
And with that, I am going to continue to organize my art and craft supplies now....

DeleteI can't keep my supplies organized. So I try to keep them out of sight. Thank heavens for bins and baskets that slide under beds and benches! Love the idea of displaying collectibles, and of storing some thing in plain sight.

DeleteHmmm, my craft room is not as large as theirs but I think its pretty well organized...at least I can say I haven't lost days looking for supplies...though I have lost days just exploring my craft room! ReplyDeleteIts changed a bit since those pictures but that's the thing with craft rooms, huh? As you change they have to in order to keep up with you...but the best way I have figured out to keep my supplies organized is to figure out what I need or what I am using the most often lately and how close I need it and then find a container that is functional, attractive and can be placed exactly where it suits me best. For all my extra supplies I just label well. And I have found the Dollar Tree has the best containers for the best price. Since they are only a dollar you can get many in the same color or size which helps your supplies look organized and cohesive. Hope this helps! :)

DeleteWorking on this project in our house as well. After two years of trying to use our home office as an office, we've given up and realized that what we really want is an art room. We have laptops, so we always end up working in the dining room or living room, so we are excited to make the unused office space into something more fun than storage.
ReplyDeleteI've been pinning a ton of studio photos on Pinterest, and we've started by adding a table and chairs that we can work around (there's enough room for the kids, too). We also have a work bench that we picked up at an estate sale. Now we just need to get some open shelves and buckets to hold all of our supplies.
I'll be moving soon, I can't wait to carve out a real art space somewhere!
